The facility and its community

Great Neck Facility

Northwell’s Sleep Disorders Center and STARS Rehabilitation sit on Community Drive in Great Neck. According to reports, the hidden cameras were placed in nine bathroom smoke detectors at these two facilities. Patients and staff from across Long Island, including Manhasset and other nearby towns, rely on these centers for specialized care.

How the breach unfolded

Investigators believe the recordings began as early as 2022. Syamaprasad installed cameras in the bathroom smoke detectors during his shifts, removed them at the end of the day and downloaded the footage. A co‑worker noticed suspicious behavior in early 2024, triggering an internal investigation and eventual arrest. However, Northwell waited more than a year to inform patients, sending letters in May 2025.

Impact on the Great Neck community

Great Neck is a tight‑knit community, and news of the hidden cameras spread quickly. Local media interviewed former staff and patients who expressed shock and anger. Brenda Pellettieri, a former employee, said discovering that a co‑worker had filmed her was devastating (abc7ny.com). Parents of young patients were particularly outraged, knowing that minors had been among those recorded.

What residents are calling for

  • Transparent investigation results.  Community members want to know how the cameras went undetected and who in management knew about the risk.

  • Improved safety protocols.  Suggestions include regular inspections for hidden devices, strict control of access to maintenance equipment and installation of tamper‑resistant fixtures.

  • Support for victims.  Local advocacy groups are urging Northwell to provide counseling and financial support for those affected.
