Survivors of the Northwell hidden camera scandal often have the same pressing questions: Was I definitely recorded? How many victims are there? Do I need to join a class action? This FAQ answers the most common questions in plain language.

Perpetrator being arrested

What happened (quick recap)

Between August 2022 and April 2024, a Northwell employee installed hidden cameras disguised as smoke detectors in bathrooms and changing rooms at the Sleep Disorders Center and STARS Rehabilitation clinics in Great Neck. Northwell fired the employee, who later pleaded guilty and is set to serve five years of probation. In May 2025, Northwell mailed letters to about 13,000 potential victims. Civil lawsuits have already been filed by Slater Slater Schulman LLP on behalf of over 400 people.

Frequently asked questions

1. Does a letter mean I was definitely recorded?  Northwell notified everyone who may have been in the facility during the recording period. You might not have been filmed, but the letter still connects you to the incident, and you should reach out to legal counsel to investigate.

2. How many victims are involved?  Northwell mailed about 13,000 letters. The true number could be higher.

3. What compensation can I expect?  Compensation varies. Past hidden camera cases have resulted in settlements ranging from tens of thousands to millions per victim. Damages may cover emotional distress, therapy costs and punitive damages. Prior results do not guarantee any outcome.

4. Do I have to join a class action?  No. You can join a class action or file an individual claim. A lawyer can advise on the best option.

5. Will my identity be public?  In most cases, plaintiffs can file under initials or pseudonyms. Your attorney can request protective orders to keep your information confidential.

What to do (simple steps)

  1. Save the letter. It may be needed as evidence.

  2. List your questions. Write down any other concerns you have.

  3. Consult an attorney. A lawyer experienced in privacy cases can answer your questions and protect your rights.

Your rights

You have the right to seek justice and compensation whether you join a class or proceed individually. Even if you never receive a definitive answer about being filmed, the emotional toll and loss of trust are valid harms. Consulting a lawyer ensures that your rights are preserved and that you receive accurate answers to your questions.
